"See How My Computer Works?"
-
Children master basic computer
skills with ease and can spend surprisingly long periods
entertaining themselves with drawing, music, and game programs.
Have your child introduce her favorite computer program to
someone else and watch the smiles light up both faces.
The things you'll do if you've
decided to let your child use a computer, you are probably
familiar with such educational CD-ROMs as Elmo's Reading:
Preschool & Kindergarten (Creative Wonders and CTW), The Logical
Journey of the Zoombinis (Broderbund), Tonka: Search & Rescue
(Hasbro Entertainment), and Let's Explore the Farm (Humongous
Entertainment). Spend some time with your child to make
sure she knows how to navigate the programs. Then when a
friend or grandparent arrives, your child becomes the expert and
demonstrates how her favorite programs work.
What your child will learn at
the age when your child is learning to zip her coat and get her
shoes on the correct feet, she can also enjoy the sense of
discovery and independent learning fostered by good CD-ROMs.
Computers, of course, don't replace playing in the sand or
baking bread, but they can reinforce many creative and analytic
skill and beginning reading and math skills that are helpful for
success in school. Equally important is the sense of
growth and competence a child experiences when she teaches her
friends and family members the amazing things she can do with
this important learning machine.
